Items and Activities Provided to Patients

We Care Bags - Each patient receives a personal bag upon admission with lots of goodies including a pillow, gum, notepad, and hygiene products.

Clothing - The hospital Fashion Shop is supplied with clothes, greeting cards, grooming items, and clothing accessories.

My Birthday - Volunteers sends cards to patients who have a birthday each month.

Birthday Cakes - Each month volunteers purchase birthday cakes for a birthday celebration on each unit.

Annual Patient Events

Summer Fun Day - An event held every summer in which patients participate in summer time activities and receive T-shirts, sunglasses, caps or visors, water bottles, bags and snacks and drinks.

Carol of Lights - An event held in December where patient enjoy Christmas entertainment in the ATD atrium and are served snacks and drinks. The patients also receive a gift purchase by the volunteers.

Recovery Rally - Volunteers purchases supplies, decorations and prizes for patients to participate in a rally celebrating recovery from mental illness. Patients perform skits and tell recovery stories in the morning and then in the afternoon they do themed games and movies.

Mothers Day and Fathers Day - Each year Volunteers fund celebrations for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day on each unit.

Fall Festival - The leaves change color and the crisp cool air sneaks in. Cozy sweaters and fuzzy socks are reminders of the changing seasons and preparing everyone for the upcoming holidays. Here at Big Spring State Hospital, we make sure to kick off this time of year with our annual fall festival. Each year volunteer services and BSSH staff host an exciting event for all our patients to prepare for not only fall and winter, but also of the joys of the holidays. It can be difficult being away from families and here our patients are reminded that even when they are away from home they are celebrated and offered an opportunity to come together with food, fellowship, activities, culture and fun.
